Biography

Joti Buttar’s work has always been rooted in grassroots-driven change — whether it’s advocating for inclusive public consultation processes, supporting small businesses, or elevating underrepresented voices through community media.

Throughout her career in public service, Joti has prioritized being out in communities, working directly with people rather than staying behind a desk. As a Senior Cultural Media Advisor with the Government of Alberta, she led cultural community outreach across the province.

In that role, Joti worked closely with newcomers, refugees, and underrepresented communities to ensure they had access to government programs and grants. She organized town halls and roundtables, and developed systems that translated vital information into over 14 languages, empowering residents to better understand what was happening in their own city and province.

Joti has also dedicated years to mentoring youth in inner-city schools, volunteering during lunch hours, building trust, and helping young people envision futures for themselves in leadership.

Across her work with non-profits, charities, and government departments, Joti has consistently focused on equity, access, and fairness. Most recently, she served as a Public Engagement Advisor in permitting and development, ensuring that infrastructure projects complied with environmental regulations and that the voices of nearby residents were heard and respected.

Joti joined Team Better Edmonton because she believes in thoughtful, community-led leadership and knows that Ward Karhiio deserves someone who listens, understands the system, and works hard every single day.

If elected, Joti would be proud to be one of the first South Asian women on Edmonton City Council — but more importantly, she would serve as a voice for the everyday Edmontonian.

Together, she believes, we can build a better Edmonton.
